For us, that means grabbing up food at great prices and then finding different ways to use it so we don’t get sick of eating the same things again and again. That doesn’t mean everything has to be crazy and unique, but even just little tweaks can mean the difference between another same ol’ boring meal and something fun and different.
Over the next few weeks I’ll be sharing quite a bit about our experience at ALDI, because they’re such a great fit for our family. It’s especially important since we recently moved and we’re new to the area, but we need to know that that we’re shopping at places that support our needs: high quality ingredients, affordable prices, good customer service. Today, I wanted to share with you one way that we keep things fresh. Of course we LOVE pizza around here. Not only can you switch things up with a variety of fresh ingredients (ALDI has a ton of great, fresh produce) but you can create different things with the dough– calzone, stromboli, pizza pockets, breadsticks, etc. Here’s a few quick ideas we whipped up, but if you have any other fun ideas feel free to share them in the comments!
1. MEATBALL CALZONE

Any time we order Italian, I go straight for the calzone. It’s one of those treats we don’t get very often, but why not make it yourself? They’re surprisingly simple to make!
1 package of prepared pizza dough
1 lb ground beef
1/4 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
1/8 cup Reggano Parmesan cheese
2 T fresh onions, minced
1/4 cup fresh spinach
1 egg, beaten
Priano Four Cheese Pasta Sauce for dipping
Split your pizza dough into 4 batches and roll into thin circles.
In a large bowl, combine the beef, cheeses, and vegetables.
Spoon your filling onto each calzone and then fold over, pressing the corners down with a fork. Brush with egg.
Bake at 375 for about 20 minutes, until it’s golden brown. Then serve with sauce on the side for dipping.

2. BREAKFAST PULL-APART BREAD
This one is a major hit with the family every time we make it!
1 batch of pizza dough
1 cup Specially Selected Aged Reserve White Cheddar cheese, crumbled
1/4 cup thinly sliced Appleton Farms Prosciutto or Capocollo
3 green onions, diced
3 eggs, beaten
First, you’re going to separate your dough into little balls, arranging them side-by-side in a cast iron skillet or a baking dish. Top 1 cup Specially Selected Aged Reserve White Cheddar cheese, crumbled, and 1/4 cup thinly sliced Appleton Farms Prosciutto or Capocollo (you can find both of these in the dairy aisle). In a bowl, beat together two eggs and pour over the top of the dish. Cover with aluminum foil and bake at 375 for about 45 minutes, making sure that the center of the dish is cooked completely. Serve immediately.

- Cook time: 45 minutes
- Makes 6 servings
3. CHEESE STROMBOLI
The ingredients to a Stromboli are as versatile as the calzone ingredients, but the difference is that a calzone is folded over and sealed on the edges and a Stromboli is wrapped up and rolled together. You could easily fill these with some of the yummy meats listed above like Appleton Farms Prosciutto and Capicollo, but I wanted this one to be meat-free so we did a four cheese.
- 1/2 cup Happy Farms Shredded Mozzarella Cheese
- 1/2 cup Happy Farms Preferred Smoked Gouda
- 8 tablespoons Happy Farms Preferred Goat Cheese
- 2 eggs beaten
- 4 tablespoons Reggano Parmesan Cheese
- Preheat your oven to 375.
- Split your dough into four equal parts. Roll each one out into a circle. On each circle, add 1/8 cup of Happy Farms Shredded Mozzarella Cheese, 1/8 cup of Happy Farms Preferred Smoked Gouda, 2 tablespoons of goat cheese.
- Fold the corners up and overlap them. Brush with egg wash and sprinkle with 1 tablespoon Reggano Parmesan Cheese.
- Put in the oven at 375 and bake until the top is golden brown.
- Prep time: 10 minutes
- Cook time: 20 minutes
- Makes 4 servings
