Writing about chocolate isn’t something that I do very much on this site. It’s not that I don’t like it, I just .. don’t love chocolate, you know?
But a few days ago I had a big ol’ batch of Ghirardelli chocolate and we whipped up these: Dutch Baby with a Salted Ghirardelli Chocolate Sauce. Something about the salty and the sweet together made me (and this due-to-arrive-in-three-weeks baby) very happy.
Now I think there may be no returning.. I’m addicted to this salty and sweet combo.
And out of this addiction these mini-pies were born. Filled with creamy, sweet Nutella and dusted with a sprinkle of sea salt, these mini pies are out. of. this. world.
Me and my daughter have been cooking a lot together. I like knowing that we can bond over food and it’s something special that only we can do together (no babies allowed!). Plus, and probably most importantly, the more she knows how to cook the less I have to do in the kitchen over the next several weeks.
Breakfast in bed? That happens now. It’s nice. I recommend that everyone get an 11 year old daughter to cook for them. 😉
So these mini pies are perfect because they’re incredibly simple. This isn’t an original idea.. it’s plastered all over Pinterest. Most of labeled as “DIY Poptarts”, and you can modify the filling with whatever you want (think jelly, chocolate, peanut butter, apple butter.. any kind of fruit butter, really) and top it with any kind of coordinated flavor: icing, sprinkles, salt.
