In cases of serious illness or accidents there is no substitute for expert medical advice. However, when you are suffering from a relatively minor ailment you might be tempted to try a home remedy to sort it out.
A lot of these home remedies sound like old wives tale but some of them are more effective than you might think.
Tomatoes Fight Acne
There are a lot of acne creams on the market but you might not even need one if you have some tomatoes handy. These vegetables (or are they fruits?) are said to work really well on a number of different skin problems. In the case of acne or oily skin you can mash one up and then put it on the affected areas on the face. It sounds weird but you then need to leave it on for an hour, so you might not want to start the process just before you go out. You then wash off the tomato and pat your face dry. Do this once a day for a week and you should see an improvement, thanks to the tomato’s mixture of antioxidants, vitamin A and vitamin C, as well as its level of acidity.
Olive Oil Sorts Out Eczema
Eczema is skin condition which can be pretty painful. Thankfully, there is a natural and effective home remedy you can use. Olive oil contains a lot of vitamin E, so it can help your skin retain moisture. The best time to use it is after a shower, when you can apply it while your skin is still a little bit damp.
Headache? Bite a Pencil
If anyone suggested to you biting on a pencil to cure a headache you might think that they were joking. However, it can work in some situations. If you feel a tension headache coming on then you will probably start to clench your jaw. At this point you can grab a pencil and put it between your teeth. You shouldn’t bite on it or start chewing it. Just having it between your teeth can help to ease the tension and stop the pain from getting worse.
Travel Sickness Cured by Sucking on a Lemon
Motion sickness is sometimes associated with the production of too much saliva, which can make you feel unwell. It has been found that the tannins which are naturally found in lemons help fight this. A home remedy which can sometimes work is, therefore, to suck on a lemon. It won’t taste great but it might help make the journey a bit more pleasant. Another option is to eat some olives, which should have the same effect.
Honey, I’ve Cut Myself
If you suffer a wound such a cut on your hand then honey is a very useful substance to have around. Putting a little bit of this sweet stuff on the wound has been proven to help keep bacteria at bay and speed up the healing process. If you are in this situation then put on plenty of honey, cover it with a non-adhesive covering and change it twice a day. Oh, and stay away from Winnie the Pooh.
Bee Stings Need Aloe Vera Not a Coin
Some accidents or illnesses have more than one possible home remedy, although not all of them are worth trying. For example, if you are stung by a bee some people might tell you put a coin on the place where you got stung to stop the pain. There appears to be no proof that this could work but there is a better alternative. Aloe Vera does give relief in this case. You can buy Aloe Vera products but if you have a plant at home then you can get some of the extract out of it without buying anything.
Tea Bags Make Cold Sores Less Painful
If you have a cold sore than then this can be pretty painful. One simple way to ease the pain is to use tea bags. All you need to do is put a wet but cool tea bag onto the cold sore once an hour. Green tea is said to be especially effective for this treatment. Just don’t make a cuppa with the tea bag afterwards.
Warts Disappear with Duct Tape
Warts are horrible things which can take a long time to disappear once they make their unwelcome appearance. The good news is that a simple course of treatment using duct tape has been shown to be highly effective in getting rid of warts. You need to first of all clean the offending wart and the surrounding area. Then you should cover it with duct tape which you gently press into position. After 3 days you remove the tape, give the wart a rub with pumice stone and put a new bit of tape on. Repeat the process until the wart is gone.
