Kombucha is a ‘sipper’ and not a ‘chugger’. To enjoy kombucha, one must let the beverage moisten all areas of the palate, so that the full effect of its flavor is experienced. A little sweet, a little sour, but a whole lot of healthy…when enjoyed in moderation.
In fact, the key to enjoying kombucha, is to consume it in moderation. It should be taken as an elixir, and not downed like a soda or a cheap beer. For the beginner drinker, it is recommended that one start off drinking no more than 8-10 oz over the course of a day. Pour a little into a cup and sip ever so slowly. Savor the tea, and take in its effects. What feelings does kombucha invoke within me? How does it make my gut feel? Does it make me feel lightheaded and drifty, or does it make me feel energetic and bubbly? Be sure to note your reactions to kombucha, and based on these reactions, determine how much is best for YOU, the individual.
Kombuchick (c) brand kombucha teas are served in 9oz cups on draft, or in 12oz bottles. I recommend my customers slowly consume the bottle over the course of a couple of days, and when they purchase cups, I suggest they sit a spell at our bar and enjoy. I love to know how my customers react to kombucha after drinking it for the first time. Their facial expressions when it hits their taste buds; the follow-up reaction when they realize they love it, and how they are eager to down the whole cup.
I love it all, and I take it all in: it helps me when coaching others who are beginning a kombucha regimen.
Kombucha, you see, is not a drink to be taken lightly. It is a powerful detoxifier, as it acts sort of like a magnet when drawing heavy metals and toxins out of our bodies. It incites and stirs up things in our gut and in order to get the nasties out, one must drink plenty of water after drinking kombucha. Drinking the daily recommended amounts of water while adding kombucha into your routine will help to flush out the toxins that have been stirred up by this crazy mushroom tea.
Parents, listen up: I recommend your children (over 4 years of age) drink no more than 2-4oz of kombucha per day. Start by mixing it into their fruit juices, and gradually start giving it to them in increased increments. Make sure they drink plenty of water over the course of their kombucha adventures.
I also recommend women who are pregnant or nursing avoid kombucha completely, and consult with your doctor before beginning a kombucha regimen.
Once you have learned how your body reacts to kombucha, and you have become accustomed to drinking plenty of water in addition to your kombucha, gradually increase the amount of kombucha you drink each day (up to 24oz). In fact, I rarely drink more than 24oz of kombucha a day.
I have found that kombucha helps with hangover recovery (a discovery stumbled upon by accident, actually), and when under such taxing conditions, 24oz in one sitting was not much too much at all. Under such circumstances only do I recommend consuming more than a day’s share of kombucha, and only for seasoned drinkers.
In sum, when drinking kombucha, remember:
- Start with a little (kombucha) and drink a lot (of water).
- Savor the beverage; let it marinate on your palate.
- Observe your reaction.
- Wean yourself onto the beverage; gradually, over the course of days, increase your daily amounts.
- 2-4oz a day for children over four is my recommended rule of thumb. (Again, everybody’s body is different, so please bear this in mind.)
