When it comes to adorning your little one you can never be too particular. For the discerning parent I recommend shopping from small artisans who take a lot of pride and care in their work. That’s why I partnered up with Beneath the Beech Tree during our recent giveaway, and I want to tell you a little about the business and business owner, Meg:
Beneath the Beech Tree specializes in hand knit baby items made exclusively from organic, fair trade yarn; much of the cotton is colorgrown, only vegetable and mineral dyes are used for the dyed yarn.
What makes Meg’s products so wonderful?
I am truly passionate about my products! All of my items are of my own design, both the actual item and all the appliques. I have tested different size needles, and different size yarns, to find just the texture, drape, and form for each of my products. Each of my patterns are tested and changed until I find exactly what I am looking for, and I change patterns when I feel I can make them better.
I knit each item by hand with care, and each applique is crocheted by myself using my own patterns, before the two are carefully sewn together. There is a lot of thought and love behind each one of my products, with an emphasis on quality, safety, use, and, of course, design! What good are the first three if you do not want to look at the item every day, and feel comforted just by touching it?
My newborn hats are so incredibly soft, perfect for a baby’s delicate skin. I put a lot of thought into their form and appearance; both the knit hat and all the crocheted appliques are my original design, and I worked hard to get them just right for you and your baby! Each one is lovingly made, the applique carefully sewn on with attention to its position on the hat as well as how securely it is held in place.
These hats are fine and light with a beautiful weight, very comfortable for everyday wear, yet warm enough to protect your baby from fluctuating temperatures. I have been told these are one of the few hats that will actually stay on your little one’s head! The color-grown cotton base and my design combine for an adorable look- reminiscent of Swedish design. They have a loose roll brim and a cute six pointed star stitch design on top, plus just the right pop of personality in the applique. These hats are knit to last, and be passed down from one baby to the next.
These drool bibs are finely knit cotton that will not only protect your baby’s adorable outfit, but complement it. They are delicate, just large enough to do their job without covering up your baby entirely, and made in three beautiful natural shades to go with everything. These bibs very much have a timeless look about them, they could go with any style and never look out of place.
The stitch designs are all inspired by nature, with the delicate dew-like eyelets on the cream bib, to the cable owl on the brown, and the botanical stitch design on the sage bib. Each bib fits comfortably around the neck. The strap attaches with a buttonhole that fits over a bobble on the bib, with one side of the strap sewn on to prevent its getting lost in the wash.
The yarn I used to make this Bittie-Blankie is made from two shades of colorgrown cotton that are twisted together to form a very fluffy yarn of varying thickness. When I knit this yarn into my flower blanket, the end result is a very soft thick blanket, with a beautiful mottled appearance of the earth tones and a lovely textural feel. The green color darkens over time with use and subsequent washings in hot water, allowing it to actually become more beautiful with age. I love the look of this blanket, the soft sage green with the cheerful yellow flowers reminds me of an early summer morning in a cottage herb garden- does it get any better than that?
