Make Your Own Banana Chips

Make Your Own Banana Chips at Home

Did you ever want to make your own banana chips and weren’t sure exactly how, or have you tried your own and wondered why they didn’t turn out just like the store bought? I will show you how to make your own, and tell you why they won’t be exactly like the store bought.

Let’s start by answering a few questions you may have:

HOW ARE THE STORE BOUGHT SO CRISPY AND SWEET, AND MY HOMEMADE ARE A LITTLE CHEWY AND TASTE LIKE FRESH BANANA BUT NOT AS SWEET?

Commercially prepared banana chips are usually deep fried in oil (mainly coconut) and even dipped in a sugar syrup.

Yes, you read that correctly! Not as healthy as it seemed huh?

Your homemade chips will more than likely be a little bit chewy and never attain that perfect crispness you may be used to from the store bought., BUT they will taste like fresh banana and not a piece of candy!

I try to find you sources of actual information when possible and not just other bloggers who say they heard it somewhere.

DO I HAVE TO DIP MY SLICES IN LEMON JUICE OR FRUIT FRESH?

Not necessarily. It is only to keep the color from turning brown. It’s purely a cosmetic thing and a personal choice.

Ingredients

  • Bananas
  • Dehydrator
  • Lemon Juice

Instructions

  • Slice your bananas as evenly as possible.
  • Place slices in your lemon juice or fruit fresh soak while you continue slicing.
  • Remove banana slices from the soak and drain on a paper towel.
  • Lay slices on drying trays.
  • Allow enough space for air to flow around each slice.
  • If your dryer has a temperature control set it to 135 degrees.
  • Dry for about 4-6 hours and then flip the slices.
  • Slices may slightly stick to the trays. Tug gently to remove them. (Sometimes I lightly spray the trays with non stick spray if my slices are very thin.)
  • Continue drying for another 4-6 hours.
  • You will know they chips are done when they are no longer sticky or tacky to the touch.
  • Cool chips completely before packaging
  • Store in air tight container.
  • Usually good for up to a year, but long term storage is better in the freezer.
