As of a few days ago, it’s officially summer in the Johnson house! No more pencils, no more books, just a bunch of kids in the house all.day.long. Just sitting around, waiting for me to entertain them. I’m sure I’m not the only one, either.
This summer we have a plan: our summer bucket list. It’s full of things to keep us entertained and off the couch. For us this plan has been vital to keeping the family entertained.
Here are some ideas on how to get your kids moving all summer long:
1. Participate I am notorious for this. So often I need to sit down to work at the computer or I’m stuck indoors trying to get caught up on chores. It isn’t very encouraging when I’m inside and I send my kids out to do their own thing. However, make exercise a family event and my kids will never say no. This has double benefits because we all need fresh air and a little running around!
2. Designate a purpose This is exactly why we made our Bucket List. Nothing is more annoying than the back and forth conversations that follow the words, “I’m bored”. Host a friendly competition, create your own field day, on a sunny day build your own DIY watermark. Stock up on supplies (water guns, slides, sprinklers, etc) so that you can throw these impromptu without stressing yourself out.
Don’t be afraid of the dirt Go. Dig. Play. Get wet. Get dirty, don’t be afraid!
4. Make the time My kids have gotten into the (terrible) routine of watching TV as soon as they wake up, which sets a lazy precedence for the rest of the day. However, exercise can become a habit just like sitting around can. Designate a special, regular time during which you do physical activity with your kids and family. This will become so ingrained that it will be second nature after a while. This helps instill good habits in your kids that will last a lifetime!
