Do you have a home project that you’ve been putting off forever? Today I’m working with BLACK+DECKER to talk about getting those DIYs marked off the “honey do” list!
A few years ago my husband was given this old oak table– the very same table that he remembers being in his house when he was a kid. We love the piece– it’s very heavy, solid wood. Quality that they just don’t make nowadays. It needed a bit of work but we put it off, and it’s been occupying our kitchen (and now entryway) for years.
There it is. (And in retrospect, I can’t believe that it looked this way just a little while ago!) It’s definitely got 30+ years of wear n’ tear on it, right?
I’ve been trying to convince my husband to refinish it forever. Normally I’m a go getter and would have simply done it myself, but I couldn’t carry it alone (did I mention it’s heavy?) and I’m pretty sure babies + stain don’t mix well.
We’re big DIYers and in the time that this was sitting in our kitchen we’ve remodeled and renovated two houses. And yet this remained.
But then I was like “Hey husband, BLACK+DECKER is doing this big giveaway and we can win a bunch of stuff if we finish that table….” and wouldn’t you know it, the project magically got moving!
Here’s that table one more time.. oh, it’s kind of painful to look at!
BLACK+DECKER has launched a movement to get all the unfinished home projects moving again. Join them for the opportunity to win $10,000 cash and products. Plus, they might put you and your finished project on a billboard right in the middle of Times Square. So while your family may never notice that you finished hanging the crown molding, millions of others will!
For this campaign, there are Weekly Prizes, at approximately $439.91 per prize, and one Grand Prize of $10,000. Until December 28th, 2014, The Weekly Prizes include one of each of the following:

For this project I used:
- sand paper (no tools necessary, we just did it by hand)
- pre-stain wood conditioner
- wood stain and finish in “dark walnut”
- Polycrylic protective finish in clear satin
Please note that we didn’t use eco-friendly products, so if you’ve had good luck refinishing furniture with green products then leave a comment and let us know your experience!
Generously apply the pre stain, don’t worry about being gentle with it, just make sure you get a bunch on there. This sets for about 15 minutes.
Once that dries apply the stain. It’ll be thick and smelly. Once it sits for a little while (please follow the instructions on the cans) you can come back and wipe up all of the excess with a towel.
Oh, it’s instantly better.
Once that cures for 24 hours you apply the top coat. Apply that carefully since you will see any bubbles or drips left behind.
