This post was developed in partnership with Tom’s of Maine. All opinions are my own.
This isn’t the first, and it’s certainly not the last, time that we discussed the importance of knowing what goes into and onto your body each day: From the foods we eat, the skincare products we use, the cosmetics and the hygienics.
Did you know that scientists estimate that each person carries within her or his body at least 700 contaminants? That means that today, more than ever, it’s important for us to seek out the products that are good for us and work them into our every day regimes.
There are a few mainstream products that I haven’t yet filtered out of my regime, so when I was given the opportunity to switch to a natural deodorant for a week, I jumped at the chance. For the past week my daughter and I have been trying the Tom’s of Maine Long Lasting Natural Deodorant and I’ve been so impressed with it!
Tom’s of Maine Long Lasting Natural Deodorant is the best-selling natural deodorant and has been for decades. Tom’s of Maine is now introducing a new deodorant formula with new and improved scents that are free of aluminum, artificial fragrances and petrochemicals.
From the fact that they disclose their ingredient list, their animal-friendly practices to their sustainable movements, they’re doing just about everything right! So in their honor I wanted to share a few tips for How to Green Your Beauty Regime.
Give your body time to adjust.
When trying a natural personal care product for the first time it’s important to give your body time to adjust. If your body is used to a conventional product, you might need a little time to adjust to a natural formula free of chemicals and artificial ingredients. For example, trying this deodorant for at least 7 days, including testing out different scents (or unscented), can help determine the best fit for your body’s unique chemistry.
And speaking of unique chemistry, it’s also important to know what you’re getting. For example, this is a deodorant (to help with odor) not an antiperspirant (to help with sweat). However, if you perspire a lot, you may need to choose an antiperspirant, depending on your day’s activities!
Read the ingredients.
How often do you look at what is inside products you use every day? Is the ingredient list simple and do you know what the ingredients are and what their purpose is? Look closely at the ingredients in your cleanser, shampoo, hair gel, make-up, and so forth. If you find a lot of suspicious chemical names, look for alternatives! Tom’s of Maine is great about disclosing their ingredient information. If you go to www.tomsofmaine.com you can see a list of every ingredient that they use, its purpose and its source!
Cut out beauty products with petroleum-based ingredients.
Read carefully – petrolatum and other names are sometimes given to petroleum-based substances.
Look for the “not tested on animals” label.
This one is pretty straight forward, but it’s important to note! You want be sure that you are not supporting the harmful and cruel practice of animal cosmetic testing.
Check for sustainability
This is a big one these days! With so many companies out there looking out only for profit, it’s important to support those that are giving back to the community and looking out for Mother Nature. Good things to look out for are products that are sold in recycled packaging and are also easy to recycle after use. Does the company go above and beyond? Toms of Maine devotes 5% of employee time to volunteering and 10% of profits are donated to good causes (there’s a ton of them. you can view the whole list here!)
Keep it simple.
This is the last piece of advice, but to me it’s one of the most important. You don’t need a plethora of elaborate, complex beauty aids. Stick with the things that give you the most bang for your buck and cut out the things that you don’t need.
