For all of our friends out there with beloved furbabies: Did you know that this week (September 20-26) is National Dog Week? I come from a family of pet lovers and ever since I can remember we’ve been rescuing animals. The day that my husband and I bought our first house we immediately started looking for a dog of our own. Despite the slobber and dog hair we love those little four legged guys! When we moved from our house to a small apartment we let our beloved husky hang out with my parents, who own acres, where she could run around with their German Shepherd—the two make a great team of chasing chickens and terrorizing the cats.
Luke recently discovered that Sam’s favorite game is playing catch, which also happens to be Luke’s favorite game. They’re best friends now and watching them play together kind of makes my heart melt. It’s basically impossible to get a picture or video of them together because they move a mile a minute.
Like this sweet toddler, dogs require just a few things to be happy: Lots of snuggles and attention, plenty of space to run around in and good food to fill their bellies.
When your kids are begging for a dog (“Please? He followed us home!”), think before you automatically say no. Pets can actually help keep children healthy on so many different levels. Here are some ways how and reasons why pets can be good for your kids.
Let’s face it, children tend to be more sedentary in this modern era of television, computers, and video games. Dogs are a great way to encourage children to be more active! If you own a dog, you have a good reason to take the family on hikes and walks. And dogs enjoy playing ball, fetching sticks, swimming—all of our favorite activities.
Dogs love to love, and that can be a real boost to a child’s self-esteem and sense of happiness. The non-judgmental nature of a pet can be very soothing for a child who is having trouble in school, with peers, or just having a bad day. Loving, furry interaction is good for mind and body.
Pets reduce stress, and therefore stress-related illnesses like heart disease and digestive disorders are reduced when people own a pet. Even watching goldfish in a bowl or tank has a calming, soothing effect. Depression is another disorder that pet ownership can keep at bay. Both small and large animals offer this benefit. Children find the presence of animals soothing—how can you be down when your favorite companion is waiting at the door for you with a wagging tail?
Taking responsibility for a dog is a healthy thing for a child to do, not to mention character building. A child can learn a lot about accomplishment and satisfaction from taking care of his or her own pet. A simple, easy task that children can do every day is participating in meal time—of course, for our dogs that’s their favorite time
