This is a sponsored post brought to you by Tom’s of Maine. I’m proud to say that I’ll be an ambassador for them throughout this year and as always, all opinions are my own!
From the very first day we hold our new little one in our arms, we are already programming them with good habits and a structured routine. Think about it for a moment. A sleep schedule, a feeding schedule, a pumping schedule, a bottle washing schedule… there are so many routines that just sort of naturally start when you become a parent. As far as habits go, think about things you started even while still pregnant. Hand washing, keeping a bag packed and ready, rubbing your belly before you go to sleep, taking your prenatal vitamin – all habits that just start and stick with you.
That new little one will just keep on growing and changing and need to learn new habits to stay healthy. As parents, it’s our responsibility to teach them these things and help them become habits. Like blowing their nose, washing their hands, and brushing their teeth. You aren’t born just knowing how to do these things, they are all taught and practiced.
There are such simple ways to teach these healthy habits, there’s no excuse! These things should be fun – it’s what helps them become habits!
Have The Right Equipment
There are adults who aren’t even brushing and flushing with the correct toothbrush or toothpaste for them, so start your little one off right with a quality toothbrush and toothpaste, like what you would find from Tom’s of Maine in their toddler pack! Not only the right size for small hands, but the ingredients are clear and easy to understand, and since you already visit Target regularly, you’ll find these in the health and personal care section! See for yourself by visiting www.tomsofmaine.com, where you can see every ingredient in every one of their products and what purpose it serves in that product.
What’s important here is to let your child pick their toothbrush color. I know, it seems like a small thing, but it’s a great first step in their independence and forming their own opinion of things. They love it so much though!
Be a Good Role Model
This one is oh, so important, Mom and Dad! If you want your child to develop a healthy habit, you need to be the best role model you can be because they are always watching and learning. Let them watch you brush and flush so they can model your actions. Get down to their level (or bring them up to yours with a chair), and brush your teeth together!
To help them with a twice-a-day routine, use verbal cues when it’s time to brush. A simple, “Let’s go brush!”. You have the control here, but remember to make it fun so they are eager to get into the bathroom, grab their Tom’s of Maine toddler toothbrush, and get to work!
Make The Dentist Your Friend
The dentist can be a scary place and person, but they most certainly are not! The first dentist visit you take your child to will set the tone for future visits, so find a dentist who works with children regularly. Ask for recommendations from other moms in your areas and don’t be afraid to ask questions to find out what their office is like. Be excited about taking your child but also understand they will be nervous. The dentist can help reassure your child that they are doing a great job with brushing, remind them to keep brushing and encourage them to come back for check-ups.
The final thing is simple… keep things fun! Find books, favorite TV shows, anything that might make brushing fun. Keep your bathroom supplied with Tom’s of Maine toddler toothpaste and start saving up quarters for Tooth Fairy duty!
