Today I had the chance to visit Full Quiver Farm in Suffolk, Virginia. Their motto pretty much sums up our short experience there: Environmentally Friendly. Animal Friendly. People Friendly.
As stewards of our environment and farm, we are committed to the following old-world practices: We don’t use any chemical or petroleum based fertilizers on our plants or pastures. We fertilize the old fashion way, with compost and manure. Our animals are treated lovingly and humanely. We try as much as possible to provide a habitat that closely resembles the animals natural environment
I got to briefly meet with John, the owner of the farm, and I was impressed by how friendly and hospitable he was. He gave us full access to the farm as he went about his own duties, encouraging us to check out the animals.
Scott and his wife Alison are big on family, and with nine kids of their own I knew they wouldn’t mind when I brought Cocobaby with me to tour. She loved seeing the chickens, cows, pigs, goats, dog, but her favorite was the bunnies. She got to touch them and talk to them [Did you know that she is fluent in chicken, pig, goat AND cow? Amazing!] –Can you imagine bringing a baby to a large scale commercial farm that doesn’t practice natural methods? She’d be traumatized by the conditions that the animals were kept in.
Scott was very open with us about what kind of organic practices they use, the measures that they take to ensure that the animals get plenty of space to roam and graze. The pigs are happiest when they are allowed to troll the forest for roots, and during the winter they are allowed to dig and fertilize the area that the spring garden with grow in.
I recommend if you want to buy organic meat and dairy products in the Hampton Roads area that you check out Full Quiver Farm.
