Over the past couple of years or so, I’ve slowly been turning over a new leaf when it comes to green living (you could say I’ve been turning over a green leaf, har har). Recycling has pretty much been a part of my DNA since I was a small child, but I never paid much attention to the chemicals in the makeup I wore, the cleaning products I used, or the food I was eating.
Switching out my makeup products was one of the first changes I made, but the use of essential oils, for both personal care and home life, followed soon after. I believe it was the mother of a friend who first introduced me to tea tree oil as a treatment for acne. And thus the world of essential oils was opened up for me.
This post will cover the top 3 oils for your home.
(Disclosure: I am absolutely no expert, this is simply what I have found works for me, or that I have read about many times over from various sources.)
This little gem is anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, and anti-viral. I use it in simple homemade cleaning products. About 2 teaspoons mixed into a spray bottle with 2 cups of water creates a basic spray good for use in killing mold (spray it on and don’t wash it off), and keeping germs and bacteria at bay (in the bathroom, on doorknobs…). You can also add a few drops to your laundry for a cleaner load.
Tea tree oil can also be used to treat acne (as mentioned above [i’ve had some success with it]), minor wounds, and athlete’s foot.
Lemon oil is a natural deodorizer. A few drops in a bowl of water will help disinfect and freshen the air in your home. You can also create a disinfecting spray by mixing it with water in a spray bottle, which would be good for countertops and tables.
Of course, this oil also has its benefits for your health. Diffusing it can help with mental clarity and may help calm anxiety.
This oil is an effective repellent. Use it to fend off mice and ants in your home and mosquitoes when you’re outdoors. You can either place a few drops in an open bowl of water, or use a little to wipe down flat surfaces.
Peppermint is also fantastic for your digestive system – good for indigestion and bad breath. You can even use it to calm motion sickness!
These are my top choices for essential oils i use at home – what are yours?
