I was selected for this opportunity to work with #HillshireFarms, but as always the content and opinions expressed here are all my own!
Let me just preface this entire story with: the hardest thing about this recipe is figuring out what to call it.
A calzone? It might be a Stromboli, but it doesn’t contain any ricotta– is that a criteria? I don’t know Google gave me mixed responses on that one.
I decided to go with a Cuban, because it’s a delicious yet traditional blend of cheese + ham + pickles + mustard.
If you’re like me you’re wary of using lunch meats because of all the processing. When we lived in the city it was easier to get around that by purchasing fresh meat, but out in the country our grocery stores are a bit more limited. So when I saw the new Hillshire Farm Naturals™ new premium line of lunchmeat I was like, “Oh heck yeah!”. This new line contains no artificial ingredients, preservatives or colors and no added nitrites/nitrates (except those occurring naturally in celery juice). The line features four varieties including: Slow Roasted Turkey Breast, Hardwood Smoked Turkey Breast, Honey Roasted Ham, and Black Forest Ham
This is so important to me, you guys. I LOVE seeing big name companies picking up on the fact that people don’t want junk in their foods. The more we talk about the real foods movement the more companies will realize that there are changes that need to be made. And when big brands like Hillshire Farms get on board it means that more every day moms have access to better quality foods. You can buy these at Wal-Mart for less than $5, making it a great first step for busy families who are trying to transition.
Okay, end rant 😉 Back to the food.
Use my recipe for painless pizza crust and you have a great dough that only uses a few ingredients and takes a few minutes.
Get the recipe here: Mix according to the directions but don’t bother to let it rise.
Split your dough into six sections (cut it in half, then cut each half into thirds). Working with one section at a time, roll it out and add your toppings:
I paired Honey Roasted Ham with fresh bread pickles that I made myself, but you could buy the sweet kind from the store and get the same effect. Smooth swiss cheese, a little bit of mayo and mustard.
Fold the crust over and seal with a fork. Brush with egg wash. Allow it to sit for about 15 minutes, covered, so the dough can rise.
It’s literally that easy, and you know it’s super versatile and easy to grab on the go! What fillings would YOU use to try this out?
