Thank you to AtHome Store for sponsoring today’s post! Check out their page to see their new Back to Campus collection and download a free move-in checklist. As always, all opinions are my own.
It’s been a year since we’ve moved into our new house, and it’s still a total work in progress. When we moved out of our much larger house I vowed that we would make the most out of living in a smaller, more appropriate space.
What I didn’t realize at the time was how much more thought goes into decorating small spaces than large. When you have less room, you obviously are going to have less room to put stuff. Oy.
Obviously their line is a great place to shop when you’re sending yours off to college. The store is huge and there are so many options, they’ve literally got something for everyone! Are you a bold, free spirit? Femme de luxe? Do you like bold pops of color?
I don’t have one in college yet, but my oldest is starting her first year at high school and her room is in major need of cleaning. organizing. decorating. Well, basically EVERYTHING! So we headed to the At Home Store to give her room a mini-makeover.
I’m hesitant to even post this picture… are you ready? It’s scary. This is a before shot of her desk.
Yikes, I know! She’s going to be so embarrassed that I’m sharing this. But we spruced up this little corner of her room by doing just a few simple things, and I wanted to share with you a few ways that we brighten up our small spaces. *All of the gear that you see below we got on our shopping spree from the Femme de Luxe collection.
Get rid of everything that you don’t love.
Note that I didn’t say to get rid of everything you don’t need. Just things that you don’t love. When you surround yourself with only the things that make your heart happy, you’re prone to take better care of those things.
Plus, when you have LESS stuff it’s easier to keep that stuff organized and in place. Like when that drawer in my kitchen is overflowing with knick-knacks? I know at that point I can either find more places to put that junk or I can get rid of some.
Everything in its place.
Speaking of junk drawers, do you have a designated space for everything you own? For my daughter, this meant a cute way to store her jewelry. A basket under the desk for the nail polish. An organizer for her makeup that she can roll up and tuck underneath when she’s not using it.
Even if you have small space, you can still utilize areas under the bed, under desks, attached to doors, etc. I love baskets (and, re: tip number one, I get baskets that I really love, that fit the decor, so that they’re a part of the room, not just a place to shove stuff when I’m not using it).
I don’t mean take a chill pill 😉 What I mean is: use light colors, because dark colors tend to make spaces feel smaller. Keep your windows open or use sheer curtains so you can have privacy while still getting lots of natural sunlight. Use ambient lighting like desk lamps or, my absolute favorite, twinkle and string lights!
Now, I’d like to hear from you! Do you have a small space that could use some organizing? Do you have any tips for keeping these rooms bright and tidy? Leave a comment and let me know.
