Beat the Holiday and Winter Blues with Aromatherapy

It’s the holidays.

For many people, it’s that time when the blues set it. Everyone’s talking about joy, laughter, giving and yet stress abounds bringing those noble and fun holiday aspects down to halt. What follows once stress has done its job is resentment, feelings of inadequacy, frustration or even anger that sits dangerously close to the surface. All because the dinner is not perfect, someone’s late, you forgot to get someone a present, you didn’t have enough money, you’re obligated to be around someone you’d rather not be around,  the dog pulled down the Christmas tree or you’re really tired and would just like to order Chinese take out for once.

Sometimes you just don’t know why you’re not clicking along with holiday spirit and sometimes it’s the mysterious winter time blues that’s accentuated by the irony of the season.

There’s hope and there’s help! There’s aromatherapy to the rescue! Try these 3 as single oils or even blend them for a real boost to good tidings.

The emotional impact of blending these 3 oils is grounding yet uplifting, centering, antidepressive, stilling the mind from worry, agitation, over thinking, harmonizing, helping to “let go” repressed negativity and a sense of expansion. Don’t we all want this? Experiment and blend the oils to suit you – one drop at a time if you have no or little experience doing this. Inhale the aroma after each addition to find out what works for you. This combination is great, works efficiently and is very well liked.

Spruce, Black (Picea mariana)

Coniferous/woody/earthy, fresh, airborne disinfectant, respiratory tonic, muscle ache and joint pain, poor circulation, immune stimulant, may stimulate thymus gland, calms solar plexus spasms, anti-inflammatory, grounding yet uplifting.

Frankincense (Boswelia Cateri)

Resinous, slightly citrus and camphoraceous, antibacterial, immunostimulant, anti-oxidant, has been used in alternative treatments for cancer, antidepressive, anti nervous depression, centering, stills the mind from worry/agitation/over thinking.

Fragonia (Agonis fragrans)

Lightly camphoraceous with slight sweet undertones, anti-inflammatory, decongestant, Immune stimulant, helps with respiratory infections from nose to lungs, analgesic, helps to relieve emotional and physical blockages, harmonizing, helps to “let go” repressed negativity, expansive.The clean crisp woodsy smell of Black Spruce brings to mind the stimulating yet calming scenario of evergreens on a snowy mountain. The resinous and camphoraceous smell of frankincense partners well with black spruce. Frankincense has deep symbolism – one of the Magi’s gifts to the holy child. It is one of the most powerful immune boosting agents around and in ancient times was considered as valuable as gold – a true sign of prosperity. Lightly camphoraceous with slightly sweet undertones, fragonia blends well with the crisp clean woodsy aroma of black spruce and the resinous camphoraceous aroma of frankincense.


ACCENTS

As great as the basic blend is, some people like to add an “accent” to it. For this basic blend, citrus or floral works well. From the suggestions below, choose one to add to your basic blend. If you add an accent to your basic holiday/winter blend, add your choice one drop at a time. Let the descriptions help you. The florals can particularly overwhelm.

Use in a room diffuser and treat everyone to a good mood or keep your good mood to private by using a personal inhaler. You may also dilute a little and apply to the solar plexus area and center of chest. You can also dilute with purified water and use as a room spray. Sprinkle a few drops on a tissue and place over your heat register.

CITRUS

Bergamot (Citrus aurantium) – Sweet, fruity, fresh, spicy, used to flavor Earl Grey Tea. Uplifts and balances, calmative, digestive stimulant Caution: phototoxic – do not expose treated skin to sunlight for 24 hours, disperses stagnant qi (accumulated or pent up stress/irritability/anger)

Orange(Citrus sinensis) – Sweet, fruity, fresh. Digestive stimulant, antispasmodic, flatulence, IBS. Encourages bile flow. Also photo toxic. Moves stagnant qi (liver), encourages adaptability and positive attitude/optimism.,

FLORAL

Geranium (Pelargonium graveolens), Sweet/floral, slightly citrus and spicy, analgesic, anti-inflammatory, stimulant for lymph, sluggish liver and pancreas, antifungal, insect repellant, emotionally balancing (workaholic perfectionist), aphrodisiac

Ylang Ylang (Cananga odorata var. genuine) Sweet, floral, slightly spicy, useful in lowering blood pressure, antidiabetic, aids combination skin, helps slow fast breathing, balances hormones, stimulates thymus gland, sexual tonic, helps with stress, depression, fear.

    This is great information. I’m new to the whole essential oil thing so it’s a learning process. Right now the only thing I know how to use them is to put them in a saltscrub or shower fizzie. I would love to learn other ways to bring them into my home!
